History of Father’s Day

The inaugural Father’s Day event was held on July 5th, 1908 in Fairmont, West Virginia. It was initially observed as a church service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South, today known as Central United Methodist Church.

After a mining tragedy killed 361 miners in nearby Monongah the previous winter, Grace Golden Clayton is thought to have suggested the event to the pastor as a tribute. Another motivation for the event was Mothers’ Day, which had been honoured for the first time two months prior in Grafton, a town 15 miles away.

Harry Meek, president of the Chicago Lions’ Club, is another contender for the title of Father’s Day originator. On the third Sunday in June, 1915, he is said to have celebrated the first Father’s Day with his congregation, which was the closest Sunday to Meek’s birthday.

Father’s Day was established by Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd in honor of her Civil War veteran father, William Jackson Smart. Mrs. Dodd recommended June 5th as the date for Father’s Day because it was her father’s death anniversary.

In Spokane, Washington, the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th, 1910. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge suggested making the day a national holiday.

President Lyndon B. Johnson designated Father’s Day a national holiday in 1966, but it was not legally recognised until 1972, during Richard Nixon’s presidency.

Father’s day 2021 is not observed on the same day in all nations. While Father’s Day is recognised on the third Sunday in June (20 June) in India, the United States, and a few other countries, Father’s Day was held on March 19 in Portugal, Spain, Croatia, and Italy.

Father’s Day 2021 is observed in September in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea.

United States, Canada, and United Kingdom

While Mother’s Day is observed on various dates around the United States and the United Kingdom, Father’s Day2021 is always observed on the third Sunday in June throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. On Sunday, June 20, all three nations commemorated the occasion with cards and Father’s Day presents.

Australia and New Zealand

Germany

Father’s Day 2021 (or Vatertag) is observed in Germany on Ascension Day, a Christian festival observed 40 days after Easter. The day always falls on a Thursday in May, and this year’s date is Thursday, May 20. Russia

Father’s Day in Russia originated as a military celebration and evolved into a men-only event. Over time, the honouring of men has evolved into the contemporary Father’s Day in the United States. Defender of the Fatherland Day is the name given to the festival because of its military origins. Father’s day 2021 was on February 23rd with parades in which many of the guys took part.
